Calculate grade percentage

Enter the marks obtained and total marks to find the percentage score.

How this calculator works

Grade percentage compares the marks you obtained to the total marks available. It is calculated as (Marks Obtained / Total Marks) * 100. This is the standard way schools, colleges, and exams report scores.

You can also work backwards. To find the marks needed for a target percentage: Required Marks = (Target Percentage / 100) * Total Marks. For example, to score 80% on a 150-mark exam, you need (80 / 100) * 150 = 120 marks.

Methodology

The calculator divides the marks obtained by the total marks, then multiplies by 100. The total marks cannot be zero because division by zero is undefined.

Examples

  • Scoring 72 out of 100 gives 72%: 72 / 100 * 100 = 72%.
  • Scoring 438 out of 600 gives 73%: 438 / 600 * 100 = 73%.
  • To score 85% on a 200-mark test, you need 170 marks: (85 / 100) * 200 = 170.
  • Scoring 36 out of 50 gives 72%: 36 / 50 * 100 = 72%.
  • To score 90% on a 120-mark exam, you need 108 marks: (90 / 100) * 120 = 108.

Common questions

How do I calculate grade percentage?

Divide the marks obtained by the total marks, then multiply by 100. For example, 75 / 100 * 100 = 75%.

How do I find the marks needed for a target percentage?

Multiply the target percentage by the total marks and divide by 100. For example, to get 80% on a 150-mark exam: 80 * 150 / 100 = 120 marks needed.

Can grade percentage be over 100%?

Usually no, because total marks is the maximum score. But if there are bonus marks or extra credit, the obtained marks can exceed total marks, giving a percentage over 100%.

What if the total marks is zero?

The calculator asks for a valid total marks because division by zero is undefined. Make sure the total marks reflects the actual maximum possible score.

How do I calculate percentage for multiple subjects?

Add the marks obtained across all subjects, add the total marks across all subjects, then apply the same formula: (Total Obtained / Total Available) * 100.

Is grade percentage the same as GPA?

No. Grade percentage is a direct ratio of marks to total marks, usually out of 100. GPA is a grade point average on a scale like 4.0, which may factor in credit hours and grade boundaries.
