Calculate percentage decrease

Enter the original value and new value to measure the decrease.

How this calculator works

Percentage decrease tells you how much a value fell compared to where it started. It is calculated as ((Original Value - New Value) / Original Value) * 100. The original value is always the reference point. A 20% decrease means the new value is 80% of the original.

Percentage decrease is different from percentage difference. Percentage difference compares two values without treating one as the baseline. Use Percentage Difference when neither value is clearly the starting point.

Methodology

The calculator uses ((Original Value - New Value) / Original Value) * 100. The original value is the denominator because it is the baseline. If the original value is zero, the calculation is undefined.

Examples

  • A jacket price dropping from $120 to $84 is a 30% decrease: (120 - 84) / 120 * 100 = 30%.
  • A monthly subscription falling from $50 to $35 is a 30% decrease: (50 - 35) / 50 * 100 = 30%.
  • Employee count declining from 500 to 425 is a 15% decrease: (500 - 425) / 500 * 100 = 15%.
  • A monthly revenue falling from $18,000 to $14,400 is a 20% decrease: (18,000 - 14,400) / 18,000 * 100 = 20%.
  • A package weight dropping from 2.5 kg to 2.0 kg is a 20% decrease: (2.5 - 2.0) / 2.5 * 100 = 20%.

Common questions

How do I calculate percentage decrease manually?

Subtract the new value from the original value, divide the difference by the original value, then multiply by 100. For example, if a price drops from $80 to $60: (80 - 60) / 80 * 100 = 25%.

Can percentage decrease be negative?

Not on this calculator. If the new value is higher than the original, the result is an increase, not a decrease. Use the Percentage Increase Calculator for growth.

What is the difference between percentage decrease and percentage difference?

Percentage decrease treats the original value as the baseline and measures the drop relative to it. Percentage difference compares two values without a baseline. Use percentage decrease when one value is clearly the starting point.

Why is percentage decrease useful?

It normalizes declines across different starting values. A $10 drop from $50 is a 20% decrease, while a $10 drop from $200 is only 5%. The percentage tells you the relative size of the decline.

How do I find the new value after a percentage decrease?

Multiply the original value by (1 - percentage / 100). For example, a 25% decrease on $120 gives 120 * 0.75 = $90.

Can I use this for revenue decline?

Yes. Enter the earlier revenue as the original value and the later revenue as the new value. The result shows the percentage drop over that period.
