Calculate percentage discount

Enter the original price and discount percentage to find the sale price and savings.

How this calculator works

A percentage discount reduces the original price by a given percentage. The amount saved is Original Price * (Discount / 100). The final sale price is Original Price - Amount Saved. This is useful for shopping, sales events, and budgeting.

To find the original price when you only know the sale price and discount, rearrange the formula: Original Price = Sale Price / (1 - Discount / 100). For example, if you paid $80 after a 20% discount, the original price was 80 / 0.80 = $100. Multiple discounts applied sequentially must be calculated one at a time, because each discount applies to the already-reduced price.

Methodology

The calculator multiplies the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to find the savings, then subtracts that from the original price to find the final price. If only the sale price and discount are entered, it divides the sale price by (1 - discount / 100) to find the original price.

Examples

  • A $80 jacket with 20% off saves $16 and the sale price is $64.
  • A $250 laptop with 15% off saves $37.50 and the sale price is $212.50.
  • A $120 item with 25% off saves $30 and the sale price is $90.
  • A pair of shoes originally $90 with 10% off saves $9 and the sale price is $81.
  • If you paid $72 after a 10% discount, the original price was $80.

Common questions

How do I calculate a discount percentage?

Divide the discount amount by the original price and multiply by 100. For example, if a $100 item is on sale for $75, the discount is (100 - 75) / 100 * 100 = 25%.

How do I find the final price after a discount?

Calculate the discount amount by multiplying the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100, then subtract that from the original price. For example, 20% off $80 saves $16, so the final price is $64.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 - discount / 100). For example, if you paid $72 with a 10% discount, the original price was 72 / 0.90 = $80.

What happens when I apply multiple discounts?

Each discount applies to the already-reduced price. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is not the same as a single 30% discount. Calculate each step separately.

Is a percentage discount the same as a percentage decrease?

They use the same math, but percentage discount is specifically for shopping and pricing, while percentage decrease is a general term for any drop in value.

Can I use this for coupon stacking?

This calculator handles one discount at a time. For stacked coupons, apply each discount sequentially to the new price after the previous discount.
